Thanks to Steve Soto for
rousing me out of my lack of funds funk and inviting me to his show this
last Saturday night. Yes, the
number one rated Adolescents played at Alex's
Bar on 6/28/03 and they kicked ass. Rather than boring you all with
a big review, I shall treat you with a list of fun details:
- Bye Bye Casey Royer, Hello Derek O'Brien. Good Move, Adolescents.
I realize that some "purists" will complain. But Casey is
a pain in the ass and my left shin...
- God Bless Alex Hernandez. Not only is the man good looking and personally
charismatic, but he runs a damn fine bar in Long Beach. Unfortunately,
Alex's Bar does not have a website that I can link to, guess this means
I ought to pitch him on a web site.... ;o)
- The nice folks of Alex's bar did not repeat Linda's Doll Hut mistake
of leaking the show to the press/radio and have 300 people in a club
with the capacity of 49 (Thanks to KROQ the Aug. 2001 Adolescents show
at Linda's Doll Hut had over 300 sub-humans in attendance and was stopped
after 4 songs). No, Alex and Crew sold 200 tickets (a bit less than
capacity) and then did not let anyone else in the bar. At all. 200.
Finito. It was wonderful from the perspective of a small person. There
was actual room to move and space to breathe, unlike the Throw
Rag show at the same venue last Halloween
- Miracle of the Shower: Rikk Agnew did not smell...
- The Adolescents were very good. New songs are very good. The much
anticipated "Amoeba" and "Kids of the Black Hole"
were excellent, even if at the very end of the set.
- The best part of going to Alex's Bar, be it for a show or just for
the air hockey, is the mixed crowd - punks, greasers, local LBC folk,
and lost college students. Only bar/club in SoCal where folks are friendly
and don't get on your case for not being a member of their tribe. Have
fun finding Alex's...
