The Dragons at Alex's Bar - Friday, Sept. 12, 2003Photos and Text by Jenifer Hanen |

The last time I saw The Dragons play was at a Loud Energy (R.I.P.) party on an exceptionally hot, triple digits, and muggy afternoon sometime during the summer of 2000. The day was so hot and humid that I did not enjoy the party or the band (whine, whine, whine). When I heard that The Dragons would be playing at Alex's and that the temps would be in the 70s with low humidity, I got in the car and drove out to Long Beach. The Dragons were on fire. Loud, abrasive, melodic, and very bounce-able. Think the best of late-70s NYC punk meets garage all stewed up in San Diego. No bro-hah, laid back surfer punk here. Nope. Fire. I found myself up front, bouncing and singing along, drinking more than I should have (ok, ok... 3 drinks in one night is too much for Ms. Jen) and I was very happy. The Dragons showed off their versatility and chops at the end of the night when they played 5-6 Clash songs. After this show, I am now a Dragons convert. Viva La Punk Rocks. Viva The Dragons!
