The LA Gay Rodeo
I think this year is the year I'll have to stop being an "LA Gay Rodeo" virgin. I've never been (in fact, I'd never even HEARD of it until I got the press release today), but my friend Tonya says it's a ton of fun. And I can't imagine anything cooler, so why the hell not?!
The LA Gay Rodeo takes place August 3 - 6 at the LA Equestrian Center in Burbank.

Ooh Baby I Love Your Way
Peter Frampton is playing the Brea Summerfest on June 4th.
For those of us in a certain age bracket, “Frampton Comes Alive” symbolizes our last fresh breath of childhood innocence. I still remember buying the two-record set for $4.99 in the Music Plus store at the Orange Mall. It was during a summer rainstorm.
The first time I french-kissed a girl was at church camp during that wonderful Summer of Frampton.
Soon after that, things got complicated. Kissing and Frampton were not enough anymore. We had to go to the next levels – second base, third base, Alice Cooper, and Kiss (the band). Before we knew it, we were corrupted, jaded, and on the pathway to punk rock.

Last time I caught the hearsemen, I think the thing that struck me the most (after my booty stopped shaking of it's own accord) was the diversity of the crowd... all types were there, you name it. Just goes to prove that great entertainment crosses all boundaries. :D

Oh yes, it is summer in SoCal again, and it just wouldn't be complete without everyone's favorite annual redneck picnic. Although an outdoor festival in July is a bit of a meteorological crapshoot, last year's affair was balmy & breezy, as opposed to the previous year's bake-fest on the Cal State Fullerton soccer fields. Here's hoping the beautiful weather holds out... but bring a parasol & sunscreen just to be safe! :D

Charles Phoenix is a Genius!
Charles Phoenix - Art Historian, Kodachrome slide collector, and Histo-tainer - is also a genius! I saw his "God Bless Americana" show the day after Thanksgiving and yes, I am giving thanks that I did! I'm telling everyone I know (that means you) to get off your tushy and get over to the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood to see his Retro Holiday Slide Show, which runs through January 2, 2005.
Phoenix, who collects vintage Kodacrome slides from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, puts them all together in various themes (vacations, holidays, Disneyland) and shows them in small theaters. He narrates them himself, without amplification, and what impresses me most is his exhaustive knowledge of retro-history. He's also funny as hell.
Make it a point to catch his show, buy his books, or take one of his tours.

VonFranco & Friends @ Bahooka!
If you've never been to Bahooka Restaurant in Rosemead, this is an excellent opportunity to check out one of Southern California's few remaining Polynesian palaces. Boasting of over 100 fishtanks, the dusty nautical decor harkens back to the ribs & grog steakhouses of the mid-century. Now a bit lackluster, it is still a fun excursion for any retrophile. Last time I hit up Bahooka there was over a two hour wait, so make reservations if you can!
VonFranco & Friends Tiki Farm Show
Saturday, July 10, 2004
7:30-11:30pm

Von Franco & Friends Tiki Show
J.R. McNasty Productions presents, The Von Franco & Friends Tiki Show, Saturday, July 10th, 2004. The event will be held at the Bahooka Restaurant in Rosemead, California from 7:30pm-11:30pm.
The show will feature Tiki art by Von Franco, carvings by Crazy AL, bamboo creations by Bamboo Ben, and mugs from Tiki Farm. Each artist will be debuting new art and merchandise, including one-of-a-kind pieces, custom items celebrating the event and a special limited edition collaboration from all four artists. Bahooka signature drinks will be available in the events collectable Tiki Farm mug, and just added a Tiki slide show presentation by Doug Nason.
The Bahooka is one of the few remaining tiki restaurants and is the perfect setting for this showcase of artists. No admission charge for the show. Call 626-285-1241 for dinner reservations (reservations highly recommended). Parking is free but limited space is available.
All hail the Tiki!!!!
About the artists:
Von Franco-- Von Franco got started with the influence of Von Dutch and Big Daddy Roth, but took it to a whole other level. He is considered a master of the pinstriping community, an amazing airbrush artist and a pioneer of the Kustom Kulture scene. While living in Hawaii in the early 70s, he studied the art of Tikis and the surf movement, an influence that is obvious in his Tiki paintings and products of today. Both Von Franco and his work have been seen in movies, television, books and countless magazines.
Crazy AL-- A native of the South West, Sculptor Crazy AL Evans got his tiki influence from a variety of sources. Kachina dolls, Trader Vics in downtown Scottsdale, trips to Hawaii, his fathers Hawaiian shirts, and a Hawaii 5-0 habit all played a large part of his childhood. In 1990, during his education at Art Center Pasadena, AL started carving tiki necklaces for the OC surf band The Swinging Tikis. The band dubbed him Crazy AL for his on-stage and on-bar antics. In 1992, AL established his company Crazy ALs Bone Productions which brings you all of his Manic Whittling recreated in affordable resin casts. Since 1997, his very unique and intricately carved large tikis have spread from Hawaii to New York City. Crazy AL also carves tikis live on-stage with his tropical themed band APE!
Bamboo Ben-- Bamboo Ben is one of the leading artists of tropical decor and bamboo work in Southern California today. His work echoes the passions of his Grandfather, Eli Hedley, who is known as the "original Beachcomber." Over the past decade, Bamboo Ben has been spotlighted in many print and film media including a feature article in Orange Coast Magazine. He has also generated an impressive clientele. From tiki bars for MGM Studios (Windtalkers' Production) to tropical pleasures for Hollywood producers, rockers, corporate heads to the largest coffee tycoon known to date; Bamboo Ben is always original. No art piece is alike. Located in Huntington Beach, Bamboo Ben creates in his studio weekly. The store door, operated by Mrs. Bamboo, opens to the public on Saturday and Sunday and displays Bamboo Ben's creations ranging from tiki bars to king size beds.
Tiki Farm-- In the Fall of 2000, Holden Westland, took up a lease on a 1,400 square foot industrial building. With about a dozen products in his line-up, he created Tiki Farm, Inc, San Clemente CAs based tiki mug manufacturer. Tiki Farm is now in over 3,000 stores worldwide, has over 100 designs, and resides in a new 5,000+ square foot facility. Tiki Farm has dedicated itself to making the finest tiki mugs available to the public, showcasing new artists, and making future collectables. Honoring traditions of the past, Tiki Farm has created several replicas of historical mugs, all done with the same level of quality and attention to detail as the originals. Tiki Farm mugs can be found in restaurants, theme parks, nightclubs and are in many surf shops as well.

THE BIGFOOT LODGE - 3172 LOS FELIZ BLVD, LOS ANGELES, 21 AND OVER WITH ID
(Live night) SUN MAY 9: TIKI OASIS AFTERPARTY: PROJECT PIMENTO, SEKSU ROBA, LUSHY, THE MAIKAI GENTS FEATURING THE MYSTERIOUS MISS MAUNA LOA: DJ Jonee and others from Sinking With The Ship. DJs start at 8:00, bands at 9:00
As a cap off for the yearly Tiki News-Caliente Tropics sponsored Tiki Oasis weekender in Palm Springs, we are bringing four Tiki Oasis bands to perform for you here in Los Angeles on Sunday May 9th. The Oasis features all that is Tiki; a daytime bazzare, live entertainment, DJs, slides, film and lots of exotic drinks. THE MAI-KAI GENTS, LUSHY, SESKU ROBA and PROJECT PIMENTO will make a bee-line from The Oasis to the Bigfoot for a Sunday Evening of Hawaianna, Theremin and Exotica.
PROJECT PIMENTO: Fresh from their scintillating performance at the ultimate lounge exotica experience, the Tiki Oasis 2004 in Palm Springs, we give you project: pimento - a San Francisco-based band with a potent cocktail of hypnotic sounds from the Theremin mixed with swanky lounge tunes from the 40s, 50, and 60s then played in a space-age pop style with hints of jazz, swing and bossa nova sprinkled on top - all for your listening pleasure!
SESKU ROBA: The way out sounds from LA's own spaced out Theremin and disco ball nunchucks duo will be specially tailored to celebrate all that is TIKI. Beyond easy listening, Seksu Roba's electronic sound comes from a dimension where sex and space go together like fruit and rum. Expect vivid visual and aural pleasure.
LUSHY is a Seattle band devoted to creating a refreshing international style, which blends influences from exotica, jazz and Latin to French pop, ska and lounge. The sounds produced by the band are a post-modern mlange of jazzy, exotica, space-age tiki-Latin surf funk: always interesting, listenable, and danceable. Drawing on the best in modern technology and inspired electric and acoustic playing, the band plays original and unique music. Their performances draw on a keen sense of musicality coupled with a dash of humour, tempered by a good dose of humility and a sense of the absurd. Lushy's debut album on Dionysus delivers a sound firmly rooted in their inspirations, but by no means derivative or copyist!
THE MAIKAI GENTS FEATURING THE MYSTERIOUS MISS MAUNA LOA: The lilting melodies and romantic crooning of The Maikai Gents will call you back to the Hawaii's yesteryears. With softly strumming ukulele and guitars along with beautiful vocal harmonies and the swaying hips of The Mysterious Miss Mauna Loa, The Maikai Gents have created a rare and wonderful phenomenon: a musical group that can entertain and delight audiences anywhere from senior centers to ultra-hip young urbanite soirees. Let their music beckon you to your island paradise.

Wreckers Ball 2004 - Sin Through Democracy?
In a gesture of unbridled impartiality (hmmm...we'll see how well that works out), the opening slots of the 2004 Wreckers Ball, scheduled for Halloween weeekend 2004 in Pomona, CA will be decided by online voting:
"YOU will vote for what bands you want to see get into the big show. There will be 3 rounds. As of now there are 28 bands who have signed up to be in the contest. Out of all the bands who end up signing on, you will vote for the top 15 then in the second round you will vote for the top 6 and for the last round only the top 3 vote getters will get into the big show. Whoever has the highest votes will get to choose what day they play. Go to the DSD website or click on this link and vote NOW http://vote.sparklit.com/web_poll.spark/805660 the first round of voting ends January 20th, The Second Round end January 31st and the last round ends February 14th and the WB 2 Site will be launched. The line up for the Wreckers Ball 2 @ The Glasshouse October 20th-31st will be announced."
So go vote, but please please pleeeease do all of us one little favor: if you friend/brother/sister/lover/whoever's band is in the contest, and they suck and you know it.....SPARE THE REST OF US AND DON'T VOTE FOR THEM! No one will know, you can lie about it - it is just a little white lie meant to protect their feelings, so it will be done out of goodwill and won't be counted against you when they're deciding your fate... in hell. >;-P

"Los Angeles, CA---November 21-22, 2003---Los Angeles-based Anxiety Films is at it again, scheduling their third annual Shock-O-Rama-A-Go-Go 24-hour film-a-thon...
...for November 21-22, 2003. The festival will take place at the Vine Theatre (6321 Hollywood Blvd) in Hollywood, CA. Doors will open at 7pm on Friday night and wont close until at least 2 A.M. on Sunday morning. Bursting at the seams with celebrities and extravagant perquisites (including a chance to ogle the luscious girls of Suicidegirls.com, Mistress Satanica, and the lovely Julie Strain), this years Shock-O-Rama will be hosted by Sham The Famous Hooker, and Count Smokula. Other guests include: DON EDMONDS (Ilsa: She Wolf of the S.S., Ilsa: Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks), TED V. MIKELS (Blood Orgy of the She Devils, Doll Squad), JULIE STRAIN (The Rowdy Girls, Sex Court) and a number of additional surprise guests to shock and astonish you. Friday night will feature this years hottest B-movie bands, and Saturday night will feature the hottest Burlesque show in the world. More than twenty films will be presented, including our Gross Out Shorts program. Midnight Movie devotees will welcome old favorites such as: Ilsa: Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks, Basket Case, Doll Squad, Eaten Alive, Zombie Holocaust, Two Orphan Vampires, and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. The discerning moviegoer will thrill at the chance to see the world premiere of Flesh for the Beast on the big screen. Those who loved ED WOOD long before his recent resurgence in popularity wont want to miss the classic Glen Or Glenda. And dont miss our Asian Invasion with such flicks as Battle Royale, Versus, and many, many more. Prizes and giveaways from select sponsors will be in high demand. A wide array of DVDs, videos, t-shirts, buttons, and an abundance of other B-movie and horror movie merchandise will be available for purchase. And, of course, all attendees are strongly encouraged, but by no means required, to come in costume. Saturday night will feature a Come dressed as Bettie Page costume contest, with a prize, to benefit those who dare to lobby against laws restricting Lap Dances at Strip Clubs. -more- 2001s Shock-O-Rama-A-Go-Go was described as a messy, frightening, eerie, rude, unruly, and anarchical, nonstop scarathon by the LA New Times. L. A. Weekly called Shock-O-Rama a grueling gross-a-thon that didnt disappoint, especially when the overnighters, sipping alcohol out of colostomy bags, began to talk to the screen a la Mystery Science Theatre 3000. And surely this politically troubled year will unearth veritable legions of movie buffs eager to, as the LA Downtown News quoted Anxiety Films president ERIC S. EICHELBERGER as saying, get their aggression out along with their fill of blatant sex, violence, and ultimate gore. Those esoteric souls who do feel the need to question (but not countermand) their eccentric and violent tastes will have the opportunity to stimulate their brains in a series of lectures and subsequent Q-and-A sessions with the festivals special guests. Don Edmonds will be on hand to discuss his latest projects, his fascination with Nazi Women, and his upcoming project with Dave Friedman. Ted V. Mikels will give it to us with his analysis of the exploitation girl-gang flick. Julie Strain will tell us about her latest involvement with TROMAs upcoming Tales From the Crapper and her film Blood Gnome. Finally, if youve had enough of talk and are ready for some action, then thrill to the rocking B-Movie bands who will be thrilling you on Friday Night! Prepare yourself, because after Fridays Asian Invasion has got you worked up to a frenzy, Saturday night Mistress Satanica, The Fishnet Floozies, the girls from RolleyDerby, The Suicide Girls, and Sweetloaf will thrill us with the hottest Burlesque show this side of a Texas Topless Hootenanny. Shock-O-Rama tickets start at $15 in advance, but will be available at the door for $20however, it is strongly suggested that you purchase your ticket in advance, as this event is expected to sell out. Tickets can be purchased at www.anxietyfilms.com and will also be available at Arons Records in Hollywood. Ample parking is a mere $5, and is located across the street. Guests are encouraged to bring sleeping bags and pillows. Guests are also encouraged to Audience Participate or as Anxiety Films organizer Eric S. Eichelberger like to call it yell insults back at the screen a la Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Those looking for a very quiet, serious cinema experience of quality Hollywood Studio films are strongly encouraged not to attend. For more information, email Anxiety Films at info@anxietyfilms.com or call (323) 666-2871, or visit http://www.anxietyfilms.com.

Sheriff (tentative) 12: 00 PM Beyond the Valley of the Dolls 35 mm print! Subsequent Q and A with some of the original cast members. 2:00 AM After-Party with booze at undisclosed location! Very important, If you are planning on bringing booze to the event, be discreet, this is privately owned theatre. The management doesnt like booze. This isnt the Downtown Palace. If you plan to bring booze, my suggestion is this: Bring a flask, buy a soda, dump the flask in your soda, and go to your car and refill the flask. I stress this. If you want to drink, please be discreet. I dont want people to get busted by the management of the theatre. Also, very important: Audience participation is encouraged! Bring pillows and sleeping bags! If you are looking for a quiet movie going experience, please dont come here, we will not be issuing refunds. Also, also very important, films that are not listed as screening from prints are screened from DVD. The reason we do this is A) to keep costs down and B) Because with a platter projection system you can show a maximum of 6 prints in a 48 hour period. THANKS! Buy tickets NOW!! at http://www.anxietyfilms.com"

"This is not a haunted house..."
...but a living exhibition of the degenerate soul."
If the average boo-hoo haunted house just doesn't cut it for you, if you truly need something depraved, then the Institute of Mental Decay, sponsored by the Los Angeles Cacophony Society looks to be severely disturbing. They're still looking for participants, so if you have any "medical fetishes, animal costumes, castration fantasies or hospital equipment", they neeeeed YOU. They're also looking for anyone "born with a tail" and "as many monkeys as we can find"....
Happy Haunting! Bwahahahahaha........

Hacienda Brothers Sunday!
I just got back from the 2nd Sunday afternoon/evening of the Hacienda Brothers - featuring Dave Gonzalez of The Paladins and the SoCal famed Chris Gaffney - at the Doll Hut. The Hacienda Brothers played roarin' honky tonky and old time country music. A true delight to the ears on a Sunday afternoon.
The Hacienda Brothers will be back at the Doll Hut next Sunday the 26th of October and again on Sun. Nov. 23rd with The Paladins for a Doll Hut Benefit just before Thanksgiving.

Flametrick Subs This Weekend
The best band I saw at the Las Vegas Rockaround wasn't even at the Gold Coast - it was the two hour live set that The Flametrick Subs played at the Double Down Saloon BEFORE they went on for the Rockaround (at 3 a.m. no less!)
Don't miss their messed up antics Friday at the Doll Hut (with Devil Doll) or Saturday at the All Star Lanes Bowl-a-Rama with The Hyperions and The Irish Brothers.
The last time the Flametrick Subs played was at the Liquid Den in Huntington Beach to a crowd of about seven (me and all my friends). Don't let this happen again!

Pit Fire...
This afternoon/evening, I went to my first Pit Fire Productions All Ages Sunday Matinee at the Knitting Factory LA with Channel 3 and Union 13. I am here to report that the show was good.
When I was a small chicklette, all ages shows in the SoCal area were really all ages. They were held at bars that had a license that allowed for the younger set to also attend. Sometime since the late 1980s, this has all changed. With the exception of clubs/bars that have had all ages liquor licenses that pre-date 1987, every club that now has all ages has no bar, only candy and slurpees.
Well, you say, this is good, it keeps kids out of trouble. Bullshit. They just drink or do drugs in the parking lot before the show, and then sit around listlessly during the bands. Ever been to Chain Reaction or Showcase Theatre? Can we say bored, listless, out of it kids? And exceptionally boring if you are over 3...
There is something to be said about a place that the over 21s want to come to as well has allowing the under 21s to attend. There is energy. The youngins get excited, they are animated, they have to act cool because they are with the big kids. The big kids are usually cool and don't buy drinks for the little ones. It all works.
I am glad that the Pit Fire Productions folks have convinced the Knitting Factory LA to have afternoon/evening shows in the front bar/lobby of the venue that is all ages. This evening's show had folks from 13-43, all enjoying themselves, laughing, hanging out, watching the bands, and singing along. The bartender was a wee bit bored, but I tipped him well.

McHistory?
McDonald's history tour
Saturday, August 16, 2003 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Meet at the world's oldest McDonald's
10207 Lakewood @ Florence, Downey
email cityofthefuture@webtv.net or call 213-484-0877 for tickets
$40 per person.
Ticket price includes museum admissions, snacks, water, air-conditioned luxury motor coach transportation, all-day parking and lunch.
This just came down the wire from Otto at the Tiki News:
This spectacular event has just been announced by famed LA Modernist and protector of architectural history Mr. Chris Nichols. Hope you will join us on August 16 on this first-of-it's-kind tour.
McHistorians Chris Nichols and Ross Plesset present a bus tour exploring the legacy and hidden history of brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald, founders of McDonald's restaurants. We will travel historic Route 66....
...into the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire, visiting the birthplace of the fast food industry.
Through museums, site visits and the personal recollections of the people who were there, you will learn the true story of the world's largest restaurant chain. The McDonnald brothers moved to California in 1932 and started an eclectic collection of businesses before trying their hand at hamburgers and changing the way the world eats.
Sites will include the colonial home of the brothers, store #7 in Pomona, the moody industrial machine shop/museum where many fast food innovations were created and the 3rd McDonald's ever built, the landmark Downey store, opened 50 years ago this week. Invited guests include former carhop Mildred "Skeeter" Kobzeff, early franchisee Jack R. Widmeyer and neon man Ray Quiel. Rare films and still photos of these early days will be screened on the bus.
Yes, we know FAST FOOD NATION, we know McDonald's owns over 28,000 restaurants, is the nation's largest purchaser of beek, pork and potatoes, is the larget owner of retail property in the U.S. and that McGlobalization is a bad thing. We'll see Southern California before all that and learn about the orange groves, hot dog stands and homemeade shacks that paved the way for this Modern world.

Warped Tour - Beware of Counterfeit Tickets
Warped Tour's spokesperson, Kristine Ashton over at MSO, sent me this press release via email today:
Organizers of the VANS WARPED TOUR want fans to beware that counterfeit tickets have been sold in the parking lots of some Southern California shows. Counterfeit tickets will not be honored at the venues.
If fans haven't purchased tickets in advance for the shows, they should do so at the box office on the day of the event.
Buyer beware.
